As mentioned in our previous Blog, Certifications in eDiscovery, there is no established certification that is required and deemed important for professionals. However, we discussed ACEDS and how they have eDiscovery certifications you can get.

While it is good to get these certifications, you might have them already, can’t afford to right now or just don’t have the time to pursue it. There are multiple ways to expand your knowledge in an easy and flexible fashion.

Coursera and Udemy

Coursera has a plethora of free online courses. If you want the actual certificate for taking the course however, you usually have to pay a fee of around $60 (est.). Udemy is also another great website. While they aren’t free, Udemy has frequent sales throughout the year where the courses go upwards of 80% off. Some courses that would be beneficial in the eDiscovery field would be:

Microsoft Excel

Excel knowledge is an asset / extremely favorable for a widespread of careers. In eDiscovery, our staff at NearZero Discovery have had multiple situations where creating queries, editing or updating a spreadsheet for a client is mandatory. You can simply do The Basic Course in Coursera or further your knowledge with other available free courses to learn to code, create queries and so much more. If you are wanting to learn even more advanced Excel skills, I encourage you to take Udemy’s Beginner to Advanced Course. I personally took this course while it was on sale for $20 Canadian (est.). The instructor for this course also has other Excel courses.

Microsoft Word – Coursera

Like Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word is used globally and can be critical to learn. We often create specific instructions to help our clients with various tasks that they are doing during a case within eDiscovery software (such as Venio), send documentation of our step-by-step procedures of how we got a long-term task done and send internally lists, procedures and creating policies. You can expand your Microsoft knowledge by also learning about PowerPoint that you might eventually need to know about for sending updates to clients and monthly metrics.

Implementing eDiscovery in SharePoint: The complete Course – Udemy

On Udemy, this course is available and will show you how to use Office 365, SharePoint, Exchange, EDRM and more (goes on sale down to $22 Canadian). Giving you the confidence and competence of everyday tools you use in the eDiscovery fieldOn Udemy, this course is available and will show you how to use Office 365, SharePoint, Exchange, EDRM and more. An Introduction to American Law – Coursera

Both Coursera and Udemy have multiple courses concerning American Law, but this specific one is a great introductory. Many people in eDiscovery find themselves not knowing certain lawyer terms, laws, procedures and more. This is why we recommended ACEDS Certifications in our previous blog. However, you might be wanting to just put your feet in the water first before beginning your ACEDS studies. This is a great way to do just that. Again, both Udemy and Coursera have multiple courses in this subject, and I encourage you to take a look.
